Also, when the engine is tuned to operate at high engine speeds, if we leave the middle engine speeds of the car alone, at low engine speeds the driver has the unrealistic feeling that the engine power at low engine speeds has decreased. Also, by replacing just one part, the amount of stress on the car's components increases and damages the other components.
The first step to tuning a car is to understand how internal combustion cars work. There are many ways to achieve high engine power, but by properly understanding your needs, you can find the right path to tuning your vehicle. For example, some require the car to have high power in the mid-range engine speed so that they can use it on a daily basis. While others aim to participate in tournaments and competitions.
Regarding the structure of the internal combustion engine of a car, its main components can be mentioned:
1. Air filter:
As the name suggests, this part is responsible for filtering the air entering the car's engine. In this section, dust and solids suspended in the air are filtered and prevented from entering the car. Now, in order to improve the air supply to the engine, the box around it can be removed. Another way to tune it is to use pipes with less friction.
2. Air flow meter:
This sensor is responsible for reporting the amount of air entering the engine to the vehicle's central computer (ECU). The vehicle's computer uses this information to calculate the correct amount of fuel required. By replacing this part with other models, more air can be supplied to the engine.
3. Turbocharger:
A turbocharger uses the pressure of exhaust gas to spin a turbine. This turbine is connected to a compressor that compresses the air entering the engine. In small-displacement engines, the presence of a turbocharger helps the engine. Now, if this turbo is converted to a turbo boost, more power can be obtained from the engine.
4. Throttle:
The throttle valve in the engine controls the amount of air entering the air intake manifold by opening and closing itself. In older systems, throttle valves operated mechanically, but today there are various types of electric throttle valves. By increasing the internal diameter of the throttle valve, the amount of air entering can be increased, and there are various other methods with which electric throttle valves can help tune the car.
5. Air intake manifold:
The air intake manifold is where air is stored before entering the cylinders. The main purpose of this part is to supply the cylinders with enough air. Depending on the type of tuning, this part can be changed to get more efficiency from the engine.
6. Valve shaft:
The valve shafts are driven by the crankshaft through a timing belt and manage the opening and closing times of the valves. Now, by replacing the factory valve shaft with other types that have higher lift and dynamism, the engine power can be increased. This car tuning method is usually used for cars that need to have high efficiency or are equipped with a turbocharger system. Using a valve shaft with higher lift and dynamism is effective at all engine speeds.
7. Valves:
There are valves on the cylinder head that open to allow the fuel-air mixture to enter the cylinder. After combustion, the exhaust valves open and direct the combustion gases out. By strengthening the valve springs, many tuners make the valve movement more precise and faster.
8. Spark Plug:
The spark plug ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture, causing the gas to expand suddenly. All spark plugs have a temperature range, and increasing this range can help improve engine performance. However, sometimes high temperatures can cause misfires.
9. Cylinder (combustion chamber):
The cylinder is a cylindrical chamber in which the piston moves. The space where the valves and camshaft are kept is called the cylinder head. But the piston and crankshaft are connected to the cylinder block. Now, by increasing the volume of the cylinder and using a larger piston, the engine volume can be increased. This method is one of the difficult stages of tuning.
10. Piston:
The explosion inside the cylinder pushes the piston down. The piston rings also surround the piston. If the engine power increases, the piston can no longer resist the forces applied. By matching the weight of each piston with the engine balance, proper performance can be obtained from the piston.
11. Connecting rod:
The connecting rod, or simply "rod," connects the piston to the crankshaft. The rod converts linear motion into rotational motion. Since this part is under very high stress, it is the first part where failure may occur. Special designs are needed to strengthen this part. As with the piston, balancing the weight in the rod is very effective.
12. Crankshaft:
The axis where linear motion is converted into rotational motion is called the crankshaft. Weight is added to this part to create a weight balance. On the other hand, its movement is also smooth. What is important in this part is the high durability of the part along with balancing the weight for each cylinder.
13. Exhaust Manifold:
This part of the engine system collects exhaust gases from inside each cylinder and directs them outside the assembly. Its length, design, and connections are very important and greatly affect engine performance. The exhaust manifold can be replaced with headers. By matching the length of each pipe for each cylinder, it can help increase power. On the other hand, with turbochargers, it is very important that the appropriate manifold is used with them.
14. Catalyst:
The catalyst is installed on the exhaust system to prevent dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide, NOx and other hydrocarbon-derived gases from entering the atmosphere. Since there are many holes inside the catalyst, it has an adverse effect on the performance of the car. By replacing the catalyst with a sports catalyst that has larger holes, its adverse effect on the engine can be reduced.
15. Muffler:
The muffler directs exhaust gases to the end of the exhaust system and at the same time reduces its noise. Standard cars also have a muffler in addition to the muffler. By increasing the diameter of the muffler pipe and increasing the angle of the bends in the muffler, friction can be reduced and ultimately power can be increased. There are different types of mufflers, so the presence of a muffler, in addition to helping increase engine efficiency, also affects the beauty of the car.
The five main measures that can be used to increase engine efficiency are the use of an intake kit, exhaust system, turbocharging the car, fuel management and ramping, and finally a very precise ignition system.
